Position Summary
The Latin American Youth Center (LAYC) is seeking a strategic and visionary leader to serve as the next President and CEO. The new President and CEO will build on the organization’s successful track record of serving and empowering a diverse population of youth through comprehensive and innovative youth development programs that address youths’ social, academic and career needs, and support their successful transition to adulthood.
 
The President and CEO will have the overall responsibility of ensuring that LAYC’s vision and mission are achieved by reporting to an active and engaged Board of Directors and leading a dedicated and talented team of more than 200 full-time staff, AmeriCorps members and volunteers. Additionally, s/he will ensure the organization’s financial health and operational efficiency, lead fundraising strategy, oversee effective programs, and build strong partnerships with a diverse group of key stakeholders throughout the National Capital Region.
 
The top candidate is a seasoned executive leader with a demonstrated passion for LAYC’s mission and values, experience effectively leading the strategic direction of an organization, and excellent financial acumen. Further s/he must be a proven fundraiser, program leader and team builder, and have a track record of developing strong relationships with diverse audiences, including funders, and government and community partners.
 
Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead LAYC’s strategic direction; collaborate with Board, staff, and key stakeholders to set clear data-driven goals and achieve LAYC’s mission
  • Operations and Financial Management: Oversee the successful execution of LAYC’s day-to-day operations, including effective strategic financial decision-making and management, reporting, and compliance
  • Fundraising: Manage existing funder relationships and implement expanded funding strategies that generate new revenue from diverse sources to ensure organizational sustainability
  • Team Leadership and Culture: Provide inspirational leadership and vision to the LAYC team and maintain a vibrant culture that promotes growth, learning, and accountability across the organization
  • Program Leadership: Oversee the management and continued improvement of LAYC’s programs, consistent with its mission and values, and budgetary considerations
  • Relationship Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, nonprofit and community partners, state and local elected officials, government agencies, and Board of Directors
  • Thought Leadership: Contribute to the base of knowledge of local, state, and national policies affecting youth and underrepresented communities
  • Communications: Serve as the principal spokesperson and passionate advocate for LAYC and the youth served
 
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated passion for LAYC’s mission and demonstrated commitment to improving outcomes for underserved youth in the Washington metro area
  • Previous experience in a senior or C-level leadership role with a demonstrated ability to manage the strategic, financial, human capital and operational needs of a complex community-based, youth-serving nonprofit
  • Proven ability to develop and execute a fundraising strategy, including a successful record of cultivating and stewarding new funding sources
  • Demonstrated aptitude for building and cultivating strong relationships with a diverse set of key stakeholders
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving meaningful outcomes 
  • Deep understanding of LAYC’s diversity and issues affecting youth of color, particularly Latino African American and immigrant youth; commitment to social justice and promoting diversity across all levels of the organization
  • Ability to lead, inspire, and develop a high-functioning team
  • Positive, engaging and entrepreneurial leadership style
  • High level of integrity and sound judgment
  • Confidence paired with humility and a willingness to “roll up one’s sleeves”
  • Knowledge of education and youth development, and of the nonprofit and political landscape in the Washington metro area preferred
  • Bilingual – Spanish/English preferred

 
About LAYC
Founded in the late 1960s, LAYC has grown from a small grassroots recreation center to a nationally recognized agency serving all low-income youth. Each year LAYC serves over 4,000 youth and families through youth centers, school-based sites, and public charter schools in the District of Columbia and Maryland’s Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties as the Maryland Multicultural Youth Centers (MMYC). Our mission is to empower a diverse population of youth to achieve a successful transition to adulthood through multi-cultural, comprehensive, and innovative programs that address youths’ social, academic, and career needs.
