About Horton’s Kids
Horton’s Kids empowers children growing up in one of Washington, DC’s most under-resourced communities and prepares them to graduate from high school ready to succeed in college, career, and life. The organization has supported and worked alongside the same Ward 8 community of Wellington Park for nearly 30 years.
 
Horton’s Kids operates a Community Resource Center that is open six days a week and located steps from children’s homes, allowing Horton’s Kids to be a consistent and trusted extension of the families it serves. Through a comprehensive yet targeted set of academic, youth development, and health and basic needs services, Horton’s Kids has achieved tremendous outcomes for the children in its programs: in fact, the high school graduation rate for program participants is twice the neighborhood average, and in 2018, 100% of Horton’s Kids seniors graduated from high school.
 
Position Summary
Horton’s Kids seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurially-minded Executive Director to navigate a rapidly evolving local landscape while continuing to grow the organization’s visibility, fundraising, and citywide impact. Building on a strong foundation, the next Executive Director will be responsible for leading the organization’s strategic direction, overseeing the day-to-day operations of its programs, and ensuring its financial sustainability. S/he will manage a budget of nearly $3M and will lead a dedicated and high-performing team of more than 30 full-time and part-time employees, and roughly 400 volunteers.
 
The ideal candidate is a visionary leader who exemplifies the organization’s core values of equity, commitment, compassion, connectedness, and integrity, and brings experience effectively leading the strategic direction of an organization. Further, s/he must be a proven team and program leader, possess excellent financial acumen, and bring a track record of developing effective partnerships with diverse stakeholders. Candidates with demonstrated track records of positive outcomes for minority children and families are strongly preferred.
 
Responsibilities
  • Strategic Leadership: Lead Horton’s Kids strategic direction; collaborate with the Board, staff, community, and key stakeholders to set clear goals and achieve the mission of Horton’s Kids
  • Team Leadership and Culture: Provide inspirational leadership and vision to the Horton’s Kids team and maintain a vibrant culture that promotes growth, learning, and accountability across the organization
  • Program Leadership: Oversee the management and continued improvement of all programs, consistent with the organization’s mission and values
  • Relationship Management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, including funders, nonprofit and community partners, state and local elected officials, government agencies, and the Board
  • Operations and Financial Management: Oversee the successful execution of the organization’s day-to-day operations, including effective strategic financial decision-making and management, reporting, and compliance
  • Fundraising: Manage and grow existing funder relationships and implement expanded funding strategies that generate new revenue from diverse sources to ensure organizational sustainability
  • Community Engagement: Develop and maintain strong relationships with the community members and families served by Horton’s Kids, consistently modeling deep care, investment, and warmth
  • Communications: Serve as the principal spokesperson and passionate advocate for Horton’s Kids
 
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated passion for Horton’s Kids mission, including a deep passion for social justice and a commitment to the organization’s core values
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in relevant field highly preferred
  • Previous experience in a senior leadership role with a demonstrated ability to manage the strategic, financial, operational, and team leadership needs of a community-based, youth-serving nonprofit
  • Experience working in education, child development, social services, and/or other relevant issue areas strongly preferred
  • Experience leading, inspiring, and developing a high-functioning team
  • Demonstrated commitment to achieving meaningful and measurable outcomes 
  • Demonstrated aptitude for building and cultivating strong relationships with a diverse set of key stakeholders, including partners, funders, and local government
  • Experience working with, supporting, and/or serving on a nonprofit Board of Directors
  • Deep understanding of urban poverty, racial bias, and the academic, social, and emotional development of children and youth
  • Positive, engaging, and entrepreneurial leadership style
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
