The National Winter Activity Center (NWAC) improves the lives, health and fitness of youth throughout the nation by providing access to winter sports activities. Launched in 2014, NWAC has served more 2,200 youth in Elev8 programs, ultimately increasing youth physical activity, imparting new sports skills and increasing confidence and self-esteem.  NWAC is based in Vernon Township, NJ at a state-of-the-art, newly-designed complex.  More information can be found at
Position Summary
NWAC is seeking a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to build, lead, and grow the development department.  The CDO will work collaboratively with the CEO, senior staff, and members of the Board of Directors to identify, cultivate, close, and steward new donors and champions for the organization as well as build the systems and processes internally to support the growth.  This is a unique opportunity to join an entrepreneurial team focused on improving the lives of youth through winter sports.
The ideal candidate brings significant experience and success with major gifts, individual donors, foundations, and is excited to contribute to the passionate, positive, and action-oriented culture.  She/he cares deeply about winter sports, has a successful track record of raising funds from a variety of sources, and is highly entrepreneurial.
This position reports to the CEO and works closely with the Board of Directors and the senior team.  While there is a preference for the CDO to be based near NWAC, candidates who would work remotely with travel to the Center will be considered.  
The CDO will have responsibility for the NWAC fundraising strategy, operations, and managing key relationships.  Additional responsibilities include the following:
  • Refine and manage a fundraising plan that meets the short and long-term needs of NWAC, regularly providing analysis about progress against goals
  • Collaborate with leadership and staff to refine and create cases for support for NWAC
  • Work closely with the CEO, Board of Directors, and team to identify and cultivate new philanthropic opportunities
  • Lead the day-to-day operations and execution of the NWAC’s fundraising strategy
  • Provide leadership of resource development programs, including: major gifts, foundation grants, corporate and institutional giving, special events, online giving, and donor stewardship
  • Research opportunities, monitor, and lead grant writing efforts for NWAC, ensuring grants are high quality, timely, and representative of NWAC
  • Identify and cultivate new donors and opportunities, and establish long-term relationships to advance the mission of NWAC
  • Refine and implement donor stewardship plans
  • Design and build a development infrastructure to support team efforts
  • Monitor philanthropic and giving trends and develop short and long-term fundraising plans aimed at maximizing revenue
  • Authentic passion for the mission of NWAC and a record of collaborative, positive, and inclusive teamwork
  • Bachelor’s Degree required and a minimum of 7 years professional experience in fundraising, sales, partnerships, or related roles
  • Track record of success in strong relationship management and a record of success raising major gifts
  • Entrepreneurial foresight and innovative spirit to recognize future trends and new opportunities
  • Ability to listen and communicate clearly, effectively and persuasively at all levels of the organization, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability and political savvy to build and sustain relationships with many constituencies, both internal and external, including colleagues, corporations, major donors
  • Superb written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to thrive in and contribute to an entrepreneurial environment
