Position Summary

The Developing Families Center (DFC) is seeking an Executive Director (ED) who will be responsible for implementing the strategic vision of addressing the racial disparity gap in maternal and perinatal health care by providing healthy birth options and a continuum of care for low-income families in Washington, DC, with a focus on wards 5, 7, and 8.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED is responsible for the leadership and management of the organization, including partnership development and cultivation, program design and implementation, and leading and managing all business and financial affairs.  The ED will work closely with DFC service partners, coordinate care, and serve as an external presence with partners and the community.
This is a time of major transition for the DFC, which has a vibrant history of reducing maternal and perinatal disparities through an innovative and inclusive birth center and early child care facility, operated by service-provider partner organizations.  The Board of Directors recently approved a strategic plan through which the DFC will redesign and relaunch its approach while staying focused on its mission of improving health outcomes for low-income women and children, including a strong commitment to community engagement. 
The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial leader grounded in the realities of a small nonprofit, who will build on the history of the DFC to chart a successful path forward for the organization during a time of change.  The new leader will be deeply passionate about health outcomes and community change and will bring a broad skillset and experience to transform the DFC into a strong community partner offering a life-enhancing perinatal continuum of care to low-income women and children.
  • Vision and strategy: Lead DFC’s strategic direction; collaborate with staff, Board, and key stakeholders in the community to set clear outcomes aligned with the new strategic plan
  • Operations and financial management: Oversee the successful execution of DFC’s day-to-day operations, including financial management, reporting, and compliance
  • Partnership and relationship management: Develop and maintain strong partnerships with organizations; develop and manage relationships with individual stakeholders including Board members, funders, community members, staff, individuals at area hospitals, and other professionals in the shared DFC community
  • Team leadership and management: Manage and mentor the small DFC staff and consultants; hire and manage new staff to help fulfill organizational vision
  • Program design: Develop education and advocacy initiatives to advance the DFC’s approach and break down barriers to midwifery services and birth options
  • Fund development: Set and meet annual fundraising goals; generate new revenue from diverse sources
  • Communications: Serve as the principal spokesperson and proactively build awareness of the DFC’s brand, programs, and impact

Qualifications and Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Passion for and commitment to the DFC mission, as demonstrated by experience with maternal care, perinatal care, community health, population health, early childhood care and education, or similar fields
  • Experience in a senior leadership role at a nonprofit organization, with significant experience working with, supporting, and/or serving on a nonprofit Board of Directors
  • Ability to build strong relationships and collaborate closely with DFC service provider partner organizations to ensure delivery of high-quality maternal and perinatal care
  • Proven fundraising experience, including the ability to identify, solicit, and secure new funders
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • A track record of creating and implementing innovative solutions that transform an organization
