About Alliance for a Healthier Generation
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation was founded in 2005 by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation as a response to the growing rate of childhood obesity. Since our founding, we have expanded our interests to supporting the whole well-being of the child, with the goal of empowering kids to develop lifelong, healthy habits. We work with schools, companies, community organizations, healthcare professionals, and families to transform the conditions and systems that lead to healthier kids. We want to create healthy changes that build upon one another and create health-promoting environments where children thrive.
Position Summary
Healthier Generation is seeking a strategic and visionary leader to serve as the next Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CEO will serve as the public face of Healthier Generation and will actively build strong relationships with public and private partners. The CEO will lead our talented team and ensure we successfully execute our strategic plan and achieve our mission of empowering kids to develop lifelong healthy habits by ensuring the environments that surround them provide and promote good health. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for children’s health, a successful record of executive leadership, extensive experience securing strong funding relationships, and a proven ability to serve as a knowledgeable voice on issues related to childhood and adolescent health, including childhood obesity prevention.
Major Responsibilities
The Alliance for a Healthier Generation CEO serves a vital and visible role within and outside of the organization. Major responsibilities include:
  • Lead and implement the organization’s strategic plan, collaborating with the Board of Directors, staff, and partners to successfully achieve Healthier Generation’s mission
  • Raising funds and diversifying revenue sources, including corporate, foundation, and individual funders
  • Building and maintaining diverse, multi-faceted relationships with partners across the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to advance the mission of Healthier Generation and encourage meaningful and scalable solutions
  • Ensuring a clearly defined and consistent vision, mission, and brand
  • Serving as the external representative and principal spokesperson of Healthier Generation in the media and in public forums
  • Anticipating and staying informed of emerging trends, policies, and developments in the field of childhood and adolescent health, including childhood obesity prevention
  • Fostering a unique culture of excellence and transparency within Healthier Generation by continuing comprehensive efforts to build, retain, and motivate an internal team of professionals
  • Cultivating a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board and ensuring open communication about the measurement of financial, programmatic, and impact performance against stated milestones and goals
Ideal Experience & Personal Attributes
  • Demonstrated experience as a senior leader of a national or global organization of comparable size and scope (organizational budget size of $20-50 million)
  • Exceptional fundraising skills and a proven record of diversifying revenue and developing and expanding a network of funders
  • Experience collaborating with and cultivating a volunteer Board of Directors
  • Credibility as a public health advocate on behalf of children and youth, capable of building support for key programs and representing Healthier Generation’s interests before a range of audiences  
  • Passion for children’s health and knowledge of current nutrition, physical activity, and public health trends
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to lead a dynamic, entrepreneurial organization and refine strategies based on market and competitive responses while maintaining financial stability  
  • Ability to build and maintain strategic public-private partnerships; experience with corporate partnerships preferred  
  • Experience strengthening an open, collaborative, learning, and entrepreneurial organizational culture while decisively navigating the team in a clear direction
  • Proven ability to attract, retain, and inspire talented staff and build a high-performance team
  • Success managing and effectively prioritizing in a highly distributed, virtual work environment
  • Exceptional presentation, communication, and listening skills, including the ability to drive consensus on complex issues and the ability to work collaboratively with key stakeholders
  • Unwavering commitment to quality programs and data-driven program evaluation
  • Highest level of integrity, ethics, and judgment
