Position Description
In collaboration with the President and CEO and the Board of Directors, the Director, Washington, DC Community (Director) will oversee the design, development, execution, and management of the Clark Foundation’s local investment strategy that will transform the Washington, DC community.
The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge, understanding, and a record of success working in the Washington, DC community and will engage on a wide array of issues impacting vulnerable and underserved populations in Washington DC. This is a unique opportunity for a visionary leader to help fulfill the legacy of Mr. Clark through rigorous strategy and a deeply intentional portfolio of investments focused on changing the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors in the Washington, DC community. 
The Director will report to the President and CEO and will join a small team of leaders focused on the local education sector, veterans’ affairs, and engineering programs. The Director will be based at the Clark Foundation headquarters in Bethesda, MD.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning:
  • Through a deep understanding of the Clark Foundation’s values and history, collaborate with the President and CEO and Board of Directors to develop a strategic framework to approach this work
  • Dedicate significant time to listen and learn from a variety of Washington, DC leaders and community champions 

  • Nurture a collaborative approach with staff, Board, and external stakeholders focused on trust, integrity, excellence, accountability, and outcomes 

  • Actively engage with community leaders and current grantees to gain a deep understanding of their programs, impact, and challenges
Program Leadership and Management:
  • Lead, develop, and execute a clearly defined vision, strategy, and plan for the Clark Foundation’s signature regional investment in the Washington, DC Community
  • Stay abreast of issues and trends in key challenges facing the community, identifying innovative and successful programs already in place and gaining an understanding of where needs remain

Stakeholder Engagement:
  • Leverage a network of thought leaders in the nonprofit, philanthropic, business, and government sectors to share best practices and identify new opportunities to increase the Clark Foundation’s impact


  • Deep knowledge, experience, and understanding of Washington, DC
  • Demonstrated commitment to social change, as evidenced by significant experience in and knowledge of the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors 

  • Ability to translate strategy into operational plans; proven experience handling highly confidential and sensitive materials and situations
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and proven creative problem-solving skills 

  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills 

  • Adept at effectively organizing time, information, and resources 

  • Self-awareness and a willingness to proactively seek feedback and learn from mistakes 

  • Critical thinking skills and sound judgment 

  • Ability to collaborate and partner with highly diverse internal and external populations
  • An ability to exhibit grace and humor under pressure 

  • Experience working in Ward 7 and 8 preferred
