Position Summary
The Humane Rescue Alliance is seeking a dynamic, visionary executive to create and execute a funding strategy that supports our ambitious growth objectives. The Chief Development Officer is a vital member of the senior executive team, serving as a thought partner to the CEO; working collaboratively with our 15-member Board of Directors, who are eager to fulfill their fundraising roles; and leading a talented team of development professionals.  In addition to a proven ability to lead a fast-paced, high-growth development operation, the ideal candidate will bring a strategic mindset and a demonstrated ability to build genuine relationships that result in engaged investors, partners, and donors. The Chief Development Officer may be based in our Washington, DC or Madison, NJ office. The expectation is a minimum of three days per week in the office with occasional travel between DC and NJ.
                               
Key Responsibilities
  • Strategy: Develop and execute a diversified fundraising strategy to support HRA’s critical programs in both regions (Washington, DC and Madison, NJ). Clearly define and communicate key outcomes and accountabilities for the team and individual staff members.
  • Team Management: Ensure each staff member is fully supported to achieve success in his/her function; cultivate a collaborative and inclusive culture with clear expectations, strong internal communication, and a high standard of excellence.
  • Executive Leadership: Participate in executive functions including strategic and annual plans, budget development, business analytics, and program/service evaluation.
  • Cross-functional Leadership: Collaborate with senior leadership to establish cross-department fundraising goals and objectives that ultimately build a strong, long-term financial base for HRA.
  • Systems: Develop processes and systems (including databases and other technology solutions) that optimize resources and effectively leverage data.
  • Board and Volunteer Engagement: Creatively engage Board members and other volunteers in all fundraising initiatives. Provide training and coaching, as needed, to ensure consistency and effectiveness of fundraising messages and objectives.
  • Donor Management and Cultivation: Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward existing and new donors. Develop and oversee a major gifts program, and identify, qualify, engage, solicit and steward prospects for major and principal gifts.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best and successful fundraising principles, ethics and practices and the fundraising industry. Proven success of growing a donor file and contribution revenue and ability to move donors progressively and through giving continuum.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written and presentation), with an ability to synthesize complex issues and communicate a narrative effectively to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
  • Ability to work across the stakeholder spectrum and quickly gain credibility with colleagues, volunteers, donors, foundations and corporations, industry partners and government officials.
  • Fluency and proficiency with the latest and best online and social media technologies.
  • Appreciation for and understanding of all aspects of business development including finance, human resources, public affairs, communications, and issue advocacy.
  • Ability to think strategically; anticipate future trends and consequences; and integrate them into long term planning and immediate term activities and projects.
  • Proven entrepreneurial thinker with demonstrated success in leveraging and adapting to changing needs.
  • Comfortable solving complex problems and eliminating barriers to success.
  • Ease in managing several initiatives simultaneously and adjusting to a frequently changing environment. Able to successfully navigate within ambiguity in a fast paced and urgent context.
  • Leadership and coaching experience with both high performing teams and underperforming employees; experience with building and leading a team.
  • Ability to empower colleagues and hold them accountable, and to give and receive honest feedback.
  • Passion for the HRA mission of supporting animals, people and the community.
  • A client-service orientation with a demonstrated ability to model the core values of the organization.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with excellent judgement and discretion.
  • Professional demeanor that exhibits maturity, diplomacy, integrity and kindness; inspires trust.

Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is estimated to be $180,000 - $200,000. In addition, the Humane Rescue Alliance offers a generous benefits package.
