ABOUT THE JOINT CENTER The Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, America’s Black think tank, provides compelling and actionable policy solutions to eradicate persistent and evolving barriers to the full freedom of Black people in America. We are the trusted forum for leading experts and scholars to participate in major public policy debates and promote ideas that advance Black communities. We use evidence-based research, analysis, convenings, and strategic communications to support Black communities and a network of allies. Currently, the Joint Center focuses on the future of work in Black communities, the impact of economic policies on Black communities in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, technology policy and Black communities, congressional staff diversity, and Black presidential appointments.
THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the Vice President of Policy, the Special Assistant, Policy (Special Assistant) will serve as an integral member of the growing Policy team, providing the administrative, scheduling, and programmatic support needed to advance the organization’s mission and uphold the Joint Center’s commitment to its nine cultural principles, which include: mission is the metric; Black communities matter; commitment to rigor and excellence; constant feedback and growth; collaboration and respect; leadership and owning your own work; and being proactive (reflective, visionary, innovative, calm, strategic, purposeful, organized, and punctual). Currently, the Joint Center has 12 employees across a variety of functions and policy areas.
The ideal Special Assistant is mission-driven, detail-oriented, collaborative, and thrives in high-performing environments. They are thoughtful, intellectually curious, and have strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills. This is an exciting role for a recent college graduate or entry level professional to learn from and with the nation’s leading scholars examining economic and tech policy issues affecting Black communities.
Provide administrative, scheduling, and operations support to the Vice President of Policy and Policy team Directors
Coordinate meetings and events on behalf of the Joint Center, serving as a representative of the organization and its values
Work collaboratively with teams across the organization to create and implement projects that advance the Joint Center’s mission
Attend and take notes at congressional hearings, briefings, and other external events on behalf of the Policy team
Manage Policy team contact lists and outreach
Provide programmatic assistance and support for the Policy team, as needed
Proactively seek out ways to support the policy team to improve efficiency and capacity of the team
Perform other duties as assigned

Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Solid planning, organizational, and problem-solving skills
Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment while prioritizing and multi-tasking effectively
Resourcefulness and interest in learning new systems
Bachelor’s degree required
One to three years of professional administrative experience is a plus
COMPENSATION The compensation range for this position is $50K - 60K. The Joint Center offers a generous benefits package, including medical/dental/life insurance, annual leave, sick leave, and federal holidays.
