About Young Invincibles
Young Invincibles (YI) is a nonprofit policy and advocacy organization committed to creating economic opportunity for young adults ages 18 to 34 by amplifying their voices in the political process. YI centers the voices and lived experiences of young people through young adult engagement programs that provide professional and leadership development opportunities for young activists and advocates.
Creating opportunity—whether economic, educational, or improving social determinants of health—is the north star of YI. YI trains young adults furthest from power and privilege, compensates them for their work, introduces them to mentors in the fields they are interested in pursuing, and shapes and creates policy together with them to improve their lives and their communities. Every young adult leaves YI programs knowing their voice and their story can help change their communities and the world.
This unique young adult engagement work coupled with extensive research and data analysis, federal and state legislative and policy advocacy, and creative storytelling strategies fuels national and regional efforts that drive policy change and create lasting impact.
Twelve years ago, YI was founded to disrupt an inequitable power dynamic during the federal debate about health care reform, with a particular emphasis on elevating the voices of young people who did not have a say in the political discourse. That spirit fueled the organization as it built out its programs across the country and created regional offices in California, Colorado, Illinois, New York, and Texas. Over time, YI broadened its focus beyond health care to include higher education, workforce and jobs, and civic engagement—issues that drive economic mobility.
Today, YI is a leading young adult advocacy organization with 35+ full time staff, a national office in Washington, DC, five state offices, and a $5.5M annual budget. The organization is at an exciting inflection point, moving into a new strategic plan and with a new Administration, and is seeking an ambitious, forward-thinking, inspiring, and inclusive leader who fundamentally understands and champions the power of young people in this important political and social moment.
About the Position
The Executive Director will work with a talented team across the national and regional offices to set the vision and overall strategy for the organization. Reporting to the Board of Directors and managing a robust and diverse senior leadership team, the Executive Director is responsible for raising the funds necessary to achieve the YI vision, leading staff who are passionate about equity and progress, overseeing the operations of the organization, and serving as a public face and voice with media, supporters, and key partners.
The ideal candidate has a record of success in leading a large team and building a shared vision across national and regional offices and across a broad range of seniority and tenure. The Executive Director must bring a strong grasp of the elements of successful policy advocacy and the ability to help the organization leverage its high-quality core programs (including young adult engagement and organizing, policy analysis and research, digital and earned communications, and storytelling) to achieve policy and social change. Significant movement building and / or organizing experience, and a deep understanding of the issues and experiences young people face are critical to success in this role.
The ideal candidate brings a deep and proven commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and understands how to lead an organization through this lens. Given the ways in which racism leads to unequal distribution of resources—impeding people of color’s equitable access to health care, higher education, and financial well-being—YI recognizes that it can and must do more to strengthen its cultural competency and commitment to racial equity. The Executive Director will champion and model these efforts internally and externally with the entire YI community.

Specific responsibilities include:
Strategy and Vision
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
- Envision the next phase(s) of advancement for the organization and build the programmatic, funding, and talent strategy to achieve its vision
- Identify high-impact opportunities to continue to build and strengthen YI’s thought leadership position in the larger advocacy ecosystem
- Showcase deep understanding of the policy and organizational landscape in order to enhance YI's leverage and impact nationally and regionally
- Lead the organization through collaborative and inclusive strategic planning and implementation efforts
- Cultivate a strong and transparent working relationship with the Board of Directors, ensure input on major strategic decisions, and develop ways for board members and staff to work together to achieve YI goals
Management and Operations
- Continue to develop, enhance, and implement the collaborative YI DEI vision and strategy
- Cultivate and champion YI’s DEI efforts with the goal of building an even stronger organization
- Work collaboratively across all staff to design and implement talent management processes and systems that increase the diversity of YI staff and leaders
- Develop consistent communication and feedback processes to ensure YI identifies, discusses, and addresses equity issues that arise with staff, partners and young adults
Fundraising and Communications
- Grow a strong internal culture grounded in staff engagement and inclusion and united around YI’s mission, values, and vision
- Lead a team of 35+ professionals, supporting their growth and development and building a consistent and supportive culture of trust and accountability across offices, regions, and departments
- Provide inspirational leadership and direction to all staff and ensure the continued development and management of a professional and efficient organization
- Directly supervise the Senior Leadership Team overseeing development, external affairs, operations, and regional strategy
- Lead a culture of performance and hold staff accountable to clearly defined goals and expectations while ensuring reasonable capacity, work-life balance, and self-care
- Facilitate collaboration and strengthen internal communications with staff throughout the organization and across state offices; create, promote, and model a positive, transparent, values-driven work environment that supports staff, partners, and program participants
- Ensure the health of YI’s human resources system and management structure
- Ensure resources stewardship, and legal safeguards for YI
- Oversee YI’s finances, including long- and short-term planning, monitoring the budget, and ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place
Desired Experiences and Attributes
- Lead YI’s development team and senior staff to build and execute a revenue strategy that supports the vision and strategy of the organization
- In close collaboration with the Senior Director of Development, steward existing funder relationships and implement expanded funding strategies that generate new revenue from diverse sources including corporations, foundations, individual low-dollar donors, events, and potential fee-based and revenue generating activities to support organizational growth and strength
- Serve as a spokesperson to the media for YI and for young adult economic issues more broadly
- Represent the positions of YI in high-level meetings with key stakeholders, including national advocacy organizations, federal, state, and local and elected leaders, Hill staff, and senior White House and Administration officials

- A deep and abiding belief in the power of young adults to effect transformational change
- A record of championing diversity, equity, and inclusion and the ability to lead with authenticity and accountability
- Experience managing, cultivating, and stewarding funder relationships and a record of success in revenue generation
- A deep understanding of the dynamics of an organization with a national headquarters and multiple regional offices and experience balancing organizational consistency, resource allocation, and community focus
- An ability to envision the future needs of YI, anticipate challenges, and execute a plan to achieve future goals with creativity and pragmatism
- A strong understanding of the relationship between politics and policy, and adept at advising and supporting YI staff in building successful campaign strategies that take both into account
- Deep experience and understanding of movement building and community organizing strategies and methods, or related experience
- A record of transparent communication and collaborative decision-making
- Experience rapidly identifying and developing responses to major strategic risks and opportunities for the organization
- A record of building trust with individuals from a wide variety of different backgrounds and experiences and building an inclusive team culture that prioritizes equity
- Excellent management instincts and demonstrated ability to mentor young leaders
- Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate a compelling vision and strategy
- Rapid and high-quality understanding of media and communications strategy, ability to persuasively represent YI’s interests publicly with reporters, policymakers, and other stakeholders
