Director of Development, School of Foreign Service
The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS)
, founded in 1919, is a premier school of international affairs. At Georgetown’s Washington, D.C., and Qatar campuses, SFS provides a rigorous education grounded in both theory and practice while instilling the Jesuit values of service.
The Director of Development is responsible for cultivating and soliciting major gifts within assigned geographical territories, requires the ability to articulate the case for supporting the vision/mission of SFS and its academic priorities, and will work on the SFS Centennial Campaign.
This person will spend approximately five to seven days per month (25-35% of time) traveling to his/her regions and have at least 200 face-to-face visits with current and prospective donors per year. The ideal candidate will work exceptionally well as a member of a team. Duties include but are not limited to:
- Manages a prospect portfolio for approximately 75 – 125 ($100,000 - $1,000,000) prospects in order to achieve annual gift giving goals.
- Initiates and maintains 20 – 60 major gift conversations annually from a constituency including alumni, parents, friends, and other organizations with an annual fundraising goal of $2 million to $3 million.
- Gambit and PRM Database, responsible for substantive moves data and verifies accuracy of contact information to ensure quality and accuracy of gift reports and correct gift accounting for prospects.
- Operates within budgetary guidelines for assigned activities.
- Manages travel budget or program budgets as assigned.
- Maintains a current body of knowledge about the School of Foreign Service and its development priorities.
- Staffs academic leaders as assigned and writes presidential briefings and talking points.
- Bachelor's Degree
- 5+ years of relevant experience. Ideally 7-10 years of directly applicable development experience
- Successful volunteer management and gift solicitation experience
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Highly developed interpersonal interaction skills
- Strong negotiating and marketing skills and leadership ability
- Ability to give significant attention to detail and to be able to keep focused on priorities
- Strong computer skills including all Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Proven ability to meet and exceed goals
- Proficiency in database management systems
- Proficiency on PRM and Gambit will be necessary for adherence to prospect management system
- Strong knowledge of Georgetown University and demonstrated commitment to education preferred
- Ability to use good judgment and ethics in handling confidential materials with sensitivity and discretion
