Executive Director, Dar al Islam

Location: Washington, DC Metro Area
Position Summary
Dar al Islam is a non-profit organization dedicated to cultivating greater understanding of Islam among Americans in order to establish our commonalities and build stronger relationships.  We are committed to an integrated, appreciative society.  We believe in collaborative efforts that encourage greater compassion and empathy between all communities. 
Dar al Islam is seeking an entrepreneurial Executive Director to serve as a key internal and external leader of the organization.  The ideal candidate is an experienced manager with a demonstrated passion for education, religious understanding and organizational development.  The Executive Director will be based in Washington, DC with travel to New Mexico and elsewhere approximately 20% of the time, and will report to the Chairman. 
Key Responsibilities

Strategy and Vision
  • Collaborate with the Chair in developing, implementing, documenting and communicating organizational vision, strategy, goals, and priorities
  • Conduct due diligence on trends, issues, opportunities, challenges and activities in education and training of and about Islam in North America
  • Continually evaluate the effects of external forces on the organization and recommend plans in support of the philosophy and vision of the organization
  • Strengthen and maintain alliances with like-minded organizations  to help further the mission of Dar al Islam 

Program Development
  • Research and conduct due diligence around best practices of religious understanding
  • Design and lead meetings with current and prospective partners and champions
  • Represent the organization and serve as a lead relationship manager to a variety of external audiences and stakeholders
  • Serve as a key liaison between the organization and the community
  • Prepare and present written summaries, analyses, and recommendations for the Chair

Resource Development
  • Design and implement a fundraising plan including a major donor program, trusts and special events
  • Identify, cultivate, close, and steward individual and institutional donors

Management and Operations
  • Manage, support, and provide professional development for staff members
  • Provide leadership across all financial platforms, including quarterly reports to the Board of Trustees
  • Implement capital improvement plans of facilities and purchases within budget and obtain approvals for capital expenses above a threshold beyond approved budget
  • Execute such contracts, grants, and commitments as may be authorized by the Chairman and the Board of Trustees

Principal Working Relationships
  • The Executive Director reports to the Chairman and is accountable to the Board and Board’s Executive Committee
  • He/she is an ex-officio non-voting member of the Executive Committee and the Board and is an overall liaison to all program committees
  • He/she hires, supervises, and manages all Dar al Islam staff
  • He/she establishes and maintains relationships with leaders at other community organizations, government, and others as appropriate

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of ten years professional leadership experience
  • Graduate degree in business, law, or public policy preferred
  • A successful track record of leading an organization, department, or initiative, including managing a budget and a team
  • Deep knowledge of Muslims in America
  • Knowledge of educational systems across North America, including public and independent schools, community colleges, universities and seminaries.
  • Track record of success raising funds and of awareness for a cause
  • Superb verbal and written communication skills
