In this exciting period of growth and strategic development, Crown Family Philanthropies (CFP) is searching for a Lead for Jewish and Israel Giving to oversee its philanthropy in the Jewish charitable sector in Chicago, nationally, and in Israel. The Crown Family has a deep commitment to Jewish causes and this is a significant leadership position in the field.
The Lead for Jewish and Israel Giving will oversee strategic thinking and program execution across all Crown Family Philanthropy entities that have a Jewish focus. This is a new position at CFP, reporting to the CFP President, serving on the CFP management team, and overseeing current program officer, analyst, and consultant roles in CFP’s Jewish grantmaking team. The role involves leading a talented group of geographically dispersed staff, consultants, and partners and being able to gel this group into a high-performing, integrated team.  The role requires knitting together previously discrete grantmaking programs and structures.
The role includes leadership in the development and implementation of strategies and systems that result in dynamic grantmaking that deepens family engagement and maximizes social impact. This position must be able to sit at the table with top nonprofit, philanthropic, and government leaders and add value through deep discussions and the development of close partnerships.  The ideal candidate will be a recognized leader in the field, highly creative, intelligent, inspiring, and particularly adept at handling sensitive and complex topics with multiple stakeholders. Additionally, this leader will work closely with family members on both the collective agenda as well as individual family member interests. 
Key Areas of Responsibility:
  • Ensure alignment, coordination, and strategic integration in Jewish philanthropy across all Crown Family entities and grantmaking processes. Advise and serve as a resource to staff as they develop and implement strategies for the entities they oversee.
  • Partner with program area leadership to lead strategy discussions among family members and other stakeholders. Work with staff to identify new strategic grant opportunities that are aligned with Jewish giving priorities.
  • Partner with program area leadership to collaborate with Jewish Charitable Committee Chair, Associate Chair, and Committee members, as well as Board members of relevant Crown-related entities, to ensure Jewish strategy and grants are integrated and reflect their interests and goals
  • Manage staff and consultants, and provide coordination to staff across funding entities. Liaise effectively with Jewish United Fund/Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago staff.
  • Coordinate between collective and individual grantmaking, advising family members on compelling philanthropic opportunities for personal giving, and developing opportunities for family member engagement.
  • Spearhead approaches for evaluation and measurement across all funds and entities.
  • Serve on CFP management team and take leadership role in internal CFP projects and activities.
  • Maintain an understanding of relevant issues and developments in the field and be an overall leader in the field.
  • Maintain deep relationships with diverse stakeholders, including grantees, funders and other external stakeholders to collaborate on efforts and maximize impact; understand best practices and immediate needs; advocate for grantees and priorities with stakeholders.

  • Detail oriented with keen conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills and an inquisitive nature
  • Significant experience managing operationally diverse and dispersed teams
  • Excellent organizational skills including ability to prioritize agendas
  • Knowledge of nonprofit organizations and nonprofit management
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; comfortable operating in a collaborative team environment
  • Ability to thrive in philanthropic and business environment driven by an extended family
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with a demonstrated track record of communicating complex issues succinctly; ability to listen and synthesize multiple inputs
  • Ability to interpret and generate financial statements
  • Highly skilled and effective at meeting facilitation
Education and experience:
  • 10 years’ experience in the field of Jewish philanthropy or the Jewish non-profit sector
  • 5 years’ experience leading and managing teams
  • Experience and exposure to the non-profit sector in Chicago or Israel; experience in both preferred
  • Masters or professional degree in closely related field, or commensurate professional experience preferred
