Position Summary
As the Foundation pursues an ambitious growth trajectory, it is seeking a Vice President, Development (VP) to lead the organization’s development efforts based at its headquarters in Washington, DC. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the VP serves as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting the U.S. Soccer Foundation. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities. The successful candidate will help forge new relationships to build the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s visibility, impact, and financial capacity.
The VP will have primary responsibility for creating the infrastructure and strategy needed to grow a $12M budget through the solicitation of major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support.
S/he will expand and diversify the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s donor base/pipeline and will work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the Board of Directors and support board members as they take on a more active fundraising role.
  • Support and partner with the CEO and Board members on all major fundraising initiatives and personally solicit and secure funding
  • Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) to develop and implement the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s financial strategy
  • Actively work with the CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy to include individuals, corporate, foundation, government grants, and targeted campaigns
  • Lead, develop and mentor a high performing and cohesive fundraising team, ensuring high levels of professionalism, innovation, stewardship, and accountability
  • Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors
  • Oversee research of funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position the U.S. Soccer Foundation ahead of major funding changes and trends
  • Ensure high-level execution of all aspects of fundraising strategy
  • Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program, including analysis of key metrics, to Board and senior leaders

  • Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred
  • 10+ years of professional experience with demonstrated success developing and implementing comprehensive and strategic development programs
  • An aggressive growth mindset and a proven track record of being able to execute and deliver in that environment
  • Excellent experience of having expanded, cultivated and stewarded strong donor relationships over time
  • Ability to create a culture of philanthropy across the organization
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships
  • Strong and comprehensive management and organizational skills including, but not limited to, short- and long-term planning, evaluation, directing and motivating staff, marketing, and financial management
  • Flexible and entrepreneurial style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives
  • Ability to work both independently, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside the U.S. Soccer Foundation
  • High energy and passion for the U.S. Soccer Foundation’s mission is essential
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail and a strong customer focus
  • Ability to travel as needed
