Summary
NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, is the nation’s largest grassroots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the millions of Americans affected by mental illness. What started as a small group of families gathered around a kitchen table in 1979 has blossomed into the nation's leading voice on mental health. Today, we are an association of hundreds of local affiliates, state organizations and volunteers who work in your community to raise awareness and provide support and education that was not previously available to those in need.
 
The National Director, Development provides leadership over all aspects of NAMI’s individual donor program, including the strategic direction, research, donor cultivation, team management, and achievement of key revenue targets. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the National Director is a member of the Executive team and helps shape the organization’s vision, direction, and culture.
                                                                                 
Duties and Responsibilities
 
Development Strategy and Planning
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction to achieve NAMI’s individual donor revenue targets
  • Plan and execute an annual fundraising plan that achieves or exceeds targets
  • Regularly provide analysis, forecasting, and progress updates to the CEO, CDO, Board, and other senior leaders
 
Leadership, Management, and Operations
  • Lead and manage a talented team of development professionals; provide coaching, mentorship, and learning opportunities
  • Work collaboratively across all departments and levels of the organization, including the Board and the NAMI affiliate network
  • Ensure development operations follow best practices and proactively seek new approaches to enhance the individual donor program’s efficiency and efficacy
  • Manage the team that oversees all aspects of direct marketing, planned giving, and events
 
Individual Donor Cultivation and Solicitation
  • Cultivate existing donor relationships; invest time in understanding NAMI’s mission and programs and identify new opportunities to engage donors and meet their philanthropic interests
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of relationships with prospective donors; conduct outreach through visits, calls, and emails to prospective and existing major donors
  • Prepare the CEO for donor visits with comprehensive and accurate research 
  • In coordination with program staff, oversee the preparation of grant proposals and progress reports to funders
 
Qualifications
  • A successful record of individual fundraising, including six- and seven-figure individual gifts
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build and sustain strong relationships; demonstrated empathy and compassion when engaging with others
  • Financial acumen and the ability to develop and manage budgets and prepare financial reports
  • Strong writing, research, organizational, and presentation skills
  • A growth mindset with a demonstrated ability to listen and learn
  • Exceptional strategic, negotiation, and diplomacy skills, including a sense of humor
  • Computer skills in MS Office, CRMs, and public records search
