Position Summary  
The Community Foundation seeks a highly organized, strategic, and experienced fundraising professional with outstanding team management skills, strong relationship instincts, and a proven record of building best practice fundraising systems and processes. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Vice President, Donor Relations (“VP") will report to and work closely with the CEO, VP, Development (who leads our new donor fund development efforts, particularly with Professional Advisors, and who is our primary major gifts and planned giving advisor), senior staff, and members of the Board to develop and implement key donor engagement strategies and internal systems and processes to support donor engagement and fundraising. The VP will lead the Donor Services team to steward The Community Foundation’s significant individual and institutional relationships. In addition, the VP will enhance and streamline internal systems and processes to support outstanding service to donors and areas of fundraising that are priorities for significant growth over the next three to five years.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Actively manage customer service team and relationships with over 600 funds; account segmentation, prioritization, and account goal setting and planning; timely communication, both proactive and reactive, with all donors regarding the administration of their charitable funds; with active and informed use of the CRM system.
  • Manage the relationship process for major gift donors and prospects with other team members, including developing strategies that may be carried out by other professionals and/or volunteer leaders. Act as the primary relationship manager for select individual, corporate, and private foundation donors.
  • Understand the charitable goals and motivations of The Community Foundation’s donors and design and implement strategies to deepen their understanding of the range of philanthropic services available to them through The Community Foundation; also, provide opportunities for donors to learn about issue areas, nonā€profit organizations, local initiatives, neighborhoods, etc., with a particular focus on initiatives led by The Community Foundation.
  • Oversee all major fundraising events, including signature events. Serve as a strategic partner in the development and marketing of these events, setting goals and delivering desired outcomes. Directly manage all aspects of sponsorship sales and host committee staffing for the annual regional Celebration of Philanthropy.
  • In collaboration with other Vice Presidents, develop and implement improvements to systems, processes, operations and infrastructure to support effective and efficient fund administration and donor customer service, including more strategic and consistent use of CRM database, records clean up, and updated policies and procedures reflecting IRS guidelines and best practices for community foundations; ensure shift in organizational culture and practice so that these improvements are consistently applied across the organization.
  • Serve as The Community Foundation’s primary staff liaison to the Board of Trustees, partnering with the President & CEO to steward relationships with Trustees, manage the regular cycle of committee and Board meetings, and to ensure that they are fully and appropriately engaged through meetings, committees and individual involvement.
  • Build and develop effective and transparent working relationships between the Philanthropic Engagement department and all other departments within The Community Foundation. Serve as the catalyst in strengthening a culture of philanthropy intended to permeate all areas of the organization.
  • Design and implement a robust set of programs, tools, platforms, events, and campaigns to accomplish these goals.

  • The ability to create and deliver compelling and useful products and services for donor engagement;
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to diverse audiences;
  • Knowledge of the philanthropic landscape in the Greater Washington, D.C. community;
